The Hill’s Jordan Fabian on Ceding Question at Briefing: It’s About Showing Press Corps Unity

The Hill reporter Jordan Fabian ceded his question to NBC News’ Hallie Jackson during a Sarah Sanders press briefing this week, a move commended by other journalists, and Fabian talked about the moment of press solidarity with CNN’s Michael Smerconish this morning.

Jackson was grilling Sanders about her denial that President Trump said “no” to a question about whether Russia is still trying to meddle in U.S. elections. Jackson confronted Sanders about Trump’s waning credibility and Sanders tried to move on. She called on Fabian… who immediately ceded to Jackson so she could finish.

Smerconish told Fabian it was “gutsy” for him to do that, especially considering how the press secretary might not come back to him for a question. Fabian acknowledged that and said it was a “professional courtesy to Hallie.”

He said follow-up questions are important for reporters in that setting and he felt it was appropriate to let her continue.

“We’ve talked a lot behind the scenes about press corps unity, about making sure all of us can do our jobs,” Fabian continued, “and in that moment I thought deferring to Hallie was the right thing to do.”

Smerconish asked if this is just the start of continued public unity among reporters in these briefings. Fabian said they all certainly have respect for one another, noting this isn’t about being the Trump opposition but simply doing their jobs.

Smerconish closed by suggesting in the future if other reporters do this they could nickname it a “Fabian.”
