House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) spoke at the United States Conference of Mayors on Friday, where she blasted President Donald Trump‘s approach to immigration policy by saying he wants to “make America white again.”
The House Minority Leader addressed the recent disputes over the future of protections for DACA dreamers, and eventually, she acknowledged the recent reports that Trump would back an immigration plan that would grant 1.8 million undocumented immigrants a path to citizenship. However, in exchange, Congress would have to allocate $25 billion for the construction of Trump’s border wall and other related security matters.
Pelosi was not impressed, and she said today that the plan would cut down legal immigration, hurt minorities, and would be an antithesis to American values.
“Let me just say what I said last night: that plan is a campaign to make America white again,” Pelosi said.
Pelosi continued to argue that Trump and the GOP are holding Dreamers under a $25 billion ransom, and she congratulated the mayors assembled in the audience who maintained sanctuary city policies in spite of federal pressure.
“This is a fight about who we are. It’s not just a fight about Dreamers, important as that is. My goodness, if any country in the world got up one day and said ‘we’re gonna send 800,000 of young people who came here with their parents back where they came from’ we’d say that country is outside the circle of civilized human behavior. Instead it’s what happening here.”
