Trump Calls on Congress to ‘Remove Federal Employees’ Who ‘Fail The American People’

President Donald Trump took a not-so-subtle dig at the FBI during his State of the Union speech, calling on Congress to “remove Federal employees who undermine the public trust or fail the American people.”

“All Americans deserve accountability and respect ― and that is what we are giving them,” Trump said. “So tonight, I call on the Congress to empower every Cabinet Secretary with the authority to reward good workers ― and to remove Federal employees who undermine the public trust or fail the American people.”

The Trump administration’s war on the FBI and Justice Department amidst the metastasizing Russia investigation has been running full steam this month, with his administration and allies suggesting there is a “deep state” conspiracy to undermine him.

This week, the resignation of FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe, after months of attacks from Trump, Republican lawmakers and the conservative media, has led to an unprecedented level of hostility between the president and his own federal institutions.
