A number of notable figures on MAGA Twitter are claiming they’re being targeted as their follower counts have come down over the past 24 hours as Twitter has purged accounts it believes to be bots.
In a statement (via USA Today), the company denies the account purge was politically motivated.
“Twitter’s tools are apolitical, and we enforce our rules without political bias,” the company said in a statement. “As part of our ongoing work in safety, we identify suspicious account behaviors that indicate automated activity or violations of our policies around having multiple accounts, or abuse.”
But some on Twitter aren’t convinced. Here’s a sampling of their skepticism:
I woke up and saw I lost 100 or so followers. First time that's ever happened. Are Conservatives being targeted like the IRS @Twitter #TwitterLockOut #TwitterPurge

Folks, many of the followers you may have lost in the overnight “purge” may actually just be from Twitter locking some accounts until they confirm their identities. As these people confirm, your lost followers return. We’ll see. I’ve already gained back 1200 this morning.

The twitter purge is real. You may have to refollow me after last night if you’re interested in my content. Twitter blocked me from twitter ads last night and purged thousands of followers. Spread the word. #TwitterLockOut @TwitterSupport @jack @twitter

there is a #twitterpurge underway. Conservatives are losing followers big time.. big numbers at once. They’re not even hiding it anymore.

Hello @jack a lot of people are asking about #TwitterLockOut could the company please provide the criteria for erasing followers while folks sleep. I know there is a lot of pressure to be more responsible in curbing certain actions but that shouldn’t extend to muting opinions
