A St. Louis grand jury indicted Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens on Thursday on felony invasion of privacy, stemming from the Republican’s affair with a woman in 2015.
Greitens, a former Democrat turned Republican who was elected governor in November 2016, admitted last month to having an affair with his St. Louis hairdresser starting in March 2015.
The charges revolve around allegations that Greitens threatened to release a nude photograph of the woman — taken while she was blindfolded and bound — if she ever went public about the affair.
St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner launched a criminal investigation into the blackmail allegations after they became public last month.
“As I have stated before, it is essential for residents of the City of St. Louis and our state to have confidence in their leaders,” Gardner said in a statement, per the Kansas City Star. “They must know that the Office of the Circuit Attorney will hold public officials accountable in the same manner as any other resident of our city. Both parties and the people of St. Louis deserve a thorough investigation of these allegations.”
St. Louis Post-Dispatch court reporter Robert Patrick spotted the disgraced governor being led away in custody:
