Hillary Clinton‘s statement about how she allowed a campaign adviser, whom she knew had behaved inappropriately towards a female employee, to stay on her team is not cutting the mustard with HLN’s S.E. Cupp.
She and Richard Socarides, former senior adviser to President Bill Clinton, argued about the timing and the sincerity of the message on CNN Newsroom with Brooke Baldwin.
“It was not courageous timing. She did it… because that first statement was wildly insufficient and tone deaf. I would not say that this was much of an improvement,” Cupp said. “There’s no ‘I’m sorry.’ There’s no ‘I apologize.’ She said if I had to do it again I wouldn’t. That’s the equivalent of ‘mistakes were made.'”
“Giving a sexual predator a second chance is giving him a second opportunity. An opportunity, by the way, that he took because he did it again while working for her super PAC,” she added.
“If she was looking for an advantage on the timing, I don’t know what the advantage was,” Socarides said, referring to the fact that Clinton chose to publish the statement a mere 15 minutes before President Donald Trump was set to deliver his first State of the Union address.
He continued, “I happen to know from talking to them they were working on this a couple of days. They got it out when it was done and after the young woman who she referenced had a chance to look at it… I think it took a lot of courage to admit that she made a mistake.”
Cupp went on to say that Clinton is “not a credible champion of women,” which Socarides took umbrage with.
“You can say you don’t think it’s a full-throttled apology. But to say that Hillary Clinton hasn’t stood up and fought for women for an entire lifetime and has been a trailblazer, that just doesn’t make any sense to anybody,” he said.
