At the end of her broadcast Friday night, Fox News’ Laura Ingraham announced she was taking what was described as a pre-planned vacation next week. The Fox host said she will be spending the Easter break with her kids and The Ingraham Angle will be manned by a slate of guest hosts while she is out.
This break comes as more than a dozen companies have pulled advertising from her show following her tweet in which she mocked Parkland student David Hogg for getting rejected by four colleges. After she sent the tweet, Hogg called on her main advertisers to pull their commercials from her show, utilizing a list from Media Matters for America. Ingraham later apologized for the tweet, stating she was sorry for the hurt her tweet caused Hogg or “any of the brave victims of Parkland, only to be rebuffed by the high school student.
If this seems somewhat familiar, you may remember that it was about a year ago when longtime Fox News host Bill O’Reilly took what he said was a pre-planned break while dealing with an exodus of advertisers from his program. Companies at that time were pushing Fox to pull their ads from O’Reilly’s show following a New York Times report detailing numerous sexual harassment settlements he had paid out. O’Reilly never returned to the air as he was fired roughly a week later.
Of course, O’Reilly’s situation last year was far different and a way bigger controversy than Ingraham’s at this moment.
Meanwhile, the ongoing issue hasn’t related to any significant decrease in viewership. On Thursday, Ingraham was the fifth most-watched program in cable news, roughly in line with how her show has performed since its debut last year.
