CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin gave AG Jeff Sessions some credit tonight for not indulging in “lunatic conspiracy theories.”
Wolf Blitzer‘s panel was discussing the news that Sessions is saying he will wait to hear the recommendation of a prosecutor looking into potential abuses on whether there should be a second special counsel.
Blitzer asked, “Was there ever a strong case for appointing a second special counsel?”
Toobin responded, “No, as far as I can tell, most of the accusations against the FBI are lunatic conspiracy theories, just not grounded in anything. And I think the Attorney General did an appropriate thing here.”
Republicans have called for a second special counsel to look into matters concerning potential FISC abuses by the DOJ and FBI.
Toobin said Republicans making these accusations are getting their information from “tinfoil hats.”
“The criticism of Sessions,” he continued, “is a political act designed to distract attention from the investigation from Trump and attack Hillary Clinton, which is what Fox News consists of about 20 hours a day. That is not the appropriate role of the Justice Department.”
