The New York Times released a new report this afternoon responding to President Trump falsely attacking them and accusing them of making up a “phony source.”
To recap: the Times reported on the latest developments on the as-of-now-cancelled North Korea summit, which included this tidbit:
As with so many issues involving this president, the views of his aides often have little effect on what he actually says. On Thursday, for example, a senior White House official told reporters that even if the meeting were reinstated, holding it on June 12 would be impossible, given the lack of time and the amount of planning needed.
On Friday, Mr. Trump said, “It could even be the 12th.”
The President was incensed, and he angrily fired back, accusing the paper of making up a source:
The Failing @nytimes quotes “a senior White House official,” who doesn’t exist, as saying “even if the meeting were reinstated, holding it on June 12 would be impossible, given the lack of time and the amount of planning needed.” WRONG AGAIN! Use real people, not phony sources.

But as reporters from the Times and many other outlets pointed out, this quote came direct from a White House staffer. Reporter Yashar Ali released the name of the staffer and the audio confirming that yes, this was not a “phony” source.
The chances of Trump retracting or apologizing for the false attack are slim to none, and the Times has now released a new report headlined “Trump Falsely Says Times Made Up Source in Report on Korea Summit Meeting.”
The report from White House Correspondent Michael Shear does not outright say the President lied, but does say this about his brazenly false claim:
It is not clear whether the president was simply unaware of the actions of his own senior staff or if he knowingly ignored the truth. The source of that sentence was a White House official who held a briefing on Thursday afternoon in the White House briefing room that was attended by about 50 reporters, with about 200 or so more on a conference call.
The Times report walks step-by-step through Trump’s false claim and what actually happened before noting, “Mr. Trump’s attack on The Times was only the latest of many efforts by the president to discredit reporting by news organizations by questioning the validity of their sources.”
