Jeffrey Toobin Scorches Kris Kobach: You’ve Devoted Your Career to ‘Stopping Black People and Poor People from Voting’

During a discussion on voting laws on Wednesday, CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin did not hold back on his thoughts about Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach.

In fact, he said Kobach has made it a career of “stopping black people and poor people from voting.”

And he said it right to his face.

It started when Kobach tried to defend his voter ID law, telling Anderson Cooper he taught Constitutional Law and the case involving voter law “is being appealed.”

He added: “And the position that the judge took, by the way, that a state cannot require voters to prove citizenship when they register, that argument was rejected by the ninth circuit about ten years ago.”

That is when Toobin said this: “Kris has devoted his career to stopping black people and poor people from voting.”

Kobach looked shocked.

“That’s an outrageous accusation!” Kobach exclaimed.

“It’s completely true,” Toobin shot back.

“An absolutely outrageous accusation,” Kobach repeated. “So if you like photo I.D., you’re trying to stop people of color from voting?”

“Absolutely,” Toobin replied, prompting Kobach to say, “That is outrageous” as the debate raged on.
