Florida rejected recount results from the Broward County elections office on Thursday night after officials missed the deadline to submit by just two minutes.
MSNBC’s Ari Melber had on Brad Todd, senior advisor to Rick Scott‘s Senate campaign, to react.
“Brad, your candidate may ultimately win, and yet he has really sort of embarrassed himself by saying all these things aren’t true, by alleging this process was going to hurt him,” Melber said to Scott on The Beat. “In fact, before these numbers were just canceled out, the Democratic margin was decreasing?”
“Wait a minute Ari,” Todd replied. “Every time when you’re a kid and you said the dog ate my homework, the dog really never ate your homework. And they really didn’t have this issue of two minutes ahead of time.”
Todd then accused Broward County officials of deliberately missing the deadline because they realized the Republican candidate was gaining votes: “What happened was Rick Scott gained 779 votes in Broward County and they decided maybe that’s not a good thing, let’s go the other way.”
“You sound like you’re the candidate,” Melber shot back. “Do you have any evidence you can offer, any specific evidence of the political nature of this problem.”
“[Brenda Snipes] is a partisan Democrat, she’s made strings of mistakes, and they’ve all benefitted Democrats” Todd responded.
“That’s not what I’m asking you,” Melber pressed. “We’ve been covering Brenda Snipes’ problems. I’m asking you if you have any specific evidence that this was a political operation with regard to the two minutes.”
“The dog never eats your homework,” Todd insisted.
“Why would they do all that work just to be embarrassed again?” Miami Herald reporter Alex Harris asked.
“You’ve made interesting allegations. Some relate to the incompetence that’s been documented, some have no support whatsoever,” Melber said to Todd.
