Brian Stelter Presses Chris Ruddy on Trump’s ‘Stalinist’ Anti-Press Rhetoric: This is ‘Dangerous’

CNN’s Brian Stelter took on Chris Ruddy, head of Newsmax and friend of Donald Trump, for an interview on Reliable Sources Sunday about the president’s escalating anti-press rhetoric.

“President Trump has been trying out a new term to describe the press in the United States,” Stelter opened the interview. “He still says we’re ‘fake news’ but nowadays he also says something even more egregious: he’s been using the term ‘enemy of the people’ more often.”

Trump wrote in a tweet this week that his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin was a “great success, except with the real enemy of the people, the Fake News Media.”

“Can someone get through to the president?” Stelter asked. “Can we ask him to stop using this kind of Stalinist rhetoric to refer to the media?”

Ruddy told Stelter that while he’s a friend of Trump, he’s also a member of the media, and therefore counts as “a member of the enemy of the people.”

When Stelter pointed out that this is what is “strange” about Trump’s “dangerous” remarks, Ruddy contested the rhetoric is borne out of the president’s anger about his treatment in the press.

“You guys never talk about any of the positives,” Ruddy said, arguing CNN should focus on Trump’s economic successes instead of his “missteps.”

“You don’t think the Russia story is worthy of primetime coverage?” Stelter asked.

Ruddy argued that the president “admitted he misspoke,” before pushing back on “hysterical” allegations that the Trump was openly colluding with Russia, or guilty of treason for his press conference with Vladimir Putin.
