Savannah Guthrie made quite a direct statement about President Trump tonight as he was just about to deliver his State of the Union speech.
Guthrie joined her colleagues earlier tonight as they prepared to cover the president’s speech and provide commentary afterwards. As Trump entered the House Chamber, Andrea Mitchell was providing commentary when Guthrie jumped in and noted how many controversies are hanging over tonight’s events.
“Let’s not forget as we see Attorney General Sessions, this is a president who is under criminal investigation right now for Obstruction of Justice with regard to the Russia investigation. So a lot going on in the backdrop.”
Guthrie was likely alluding the news that Trump has talked with Sessions about prosecuting Robert Mueller in order to throw off the special counsel investigation into Russia’s election meddling. The future of Mueller’s investigation is somewhat ambiguous at the moment, in light of Andrew McCabe‘s FBI departure and the recent revelation that Trump wanted Mueller gone at one point.
