Nicolle Wallace: SOTU Revealed Trump’s ‘Deep and Almost Sort of Sad Obsession With Being Liked’

President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address has come and gone. Now it’s time for the fun stuff, pundits performing astounding feats of punditry.

MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace chimed in during a panel discussion with Chris Matthews, Rachel Maddow and others, quite literally calling the president “almost sad.”

Her remarks came during a discussion about the tone of the speech, with Wallace saying that it revealed Trump’s “deep and almost sort of sad obsession with being liked.”

“He is always performing for the audience watching,” she said. “He was obviously aware that this audience tonight is different than the audience that tunes in to the kinds of one-on-one interviews he grants as president and those are usually interviews granted to friendly anchors at Fox News.”

Maddow asked, “You mean he was speaking to a broader audience?”

Wallace continued, “He was aware, as a former TV figure, that the TV audience is outside of the primetime audience at Fox News, but I don’t think we should sugarcoat what, for a normal president, would be sort of jaw-dropping elements of this speech. There’s a line getting a lot of attention that’s basically an attack on the deep state.”

Maddow also reminded viewers, as the panel discussed Trump’s repeated references to violent acts performed by MS-13 gang members, that “It is worth noting, early and often, over the course of this night, that immigrants are less likely to commit crimes in this country than native born U.S. citizens.”
