NYT’s Thomas Friedman Hits Dana Loesch For Saying Media ‘Loves’ School Shootings: ‘Just Disgusting’

New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman appeared on CNN this afternoon to discuss the gun control debate with Wolf Blitzer.

Their discussion, eventually, turned to comments made this afternoon by NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch, as she spoke in front of an adoring crowd at CPAC.

Loesch told the assembled audience that “many in legacy media love mass shootings,” continuing to tell the gathered reporters that “crying white mothers are ratings gold to you and many in the legacy media.”

Friedman, a member of the legacy media himself, did not abide by those comments, calling them “disgusting.”

“It’s just disgusting. That is just disgusting,” he said, pointing out that Loesch struck a more conciliatory tone at last night’s CNN Town Hall on gun control

“What a courageous woman. Why didn’t you say that last night when you were facing those students? You go before a hyper-conservative convention and say that?”

He also piled on Wayne LaPierre’s CPAC comments, in which the NRA chief exclaimed that the debate was not about guns, but rather freedom.

“I don’t have the freedom, Wolf, to have an F15 in my driveway and tell my neighbors I’m fertilizing the backyard with a fighter jet,” he said.

Friedman continued, “I don’t have the freedom to have an M1A1 tank in my driveway. It’s not about freedom. This is about balancing the legitimate rights of Americans that want to have guns to hunt, to do marksmanship or to protect themselves, and the need to make sure those guns don’t fall into the hands of people who will use them in this kind of massacre.”

Friedman’s appearance on CNN follows a column published by the Times earlier today, which found the veteran columnist urging young people to vote and to get off Facebook and other social media sites.

“There’s only one thing to do,” he told Blitzer. “Vote.”
