U.S. prosecutors are gearing up for what they hope will be Julian Assange‘s day in an American court, according to a new report.
On Thursday, it was revealed in The Wall Street Journal that the Justice Department is feeling “increasingly optimistic” about the possibility, Washington insiders believe.
Though the Wikileaks founder has been hunkering down in London’s embassy in Ecuador since the country granted him asylum back in 2012, the Journal reported that he could be publicly indicted soon, which might cause him to be pushed out.
The outlet was unable to specify the particular charges Assange may face but added that they could relate to the Espionage Act that bears consequences for divulging information pertaining to national defense.
Barry Pollack, Assange’s lawyer, told the Journal he had “heard nothing from authorities suggesting that a criminal case against Mr. Assange is imminent.”
“Prosecuting someone for publishing truthful information would set a terrible and dangerous precedent,” Pollack said.
