Earlier today, President Donald Trump criticized former Broward County Sheriff’s deputy Scot Peterson for not rushing into the building during the Parkland shooting. Besides stating that Peterson choked, Trump claimed that if it were him, he would have personally run in and confronted the shooter, even if he was unarmed.
At the top of today’s The Lead, CNN anchor Jake Tapper dinged the president by bringing up Trump’s multiple deferments during the Vietnam War. Highlighting Trump’s comments, Tapper led off his show by snarkily noting that the president’s “military classmates who served in Vietnam could not be reached for comment.”
Later on, while recapping the news from the White House, Tapper specifically pointed out the president’s lack of active military service.
“Today President Trump said the school officer on the scene choked and he declared that he, the President of the United States, and former military academy student who repeatedly sought deferments to avoid service in the Vietnam war, he would have run into the building, even if he didn’t have a gun,” the host said.
In a panel discussion a few minutes later, both conservative pundit Bill Kristol and liberal commentator Angela Rye dinged the president for claiming he’d personally be courageous in the line of fire, with Rye stating that he’s “very vulnerable” on this issue because he “skirted military duty.”
