Last night, comedian Roseanne Barr raised a lot of eyebrows when she sent out a tweet claiming President Donald Trump had saved hundreds of children a month from sex trafficking rings. Keen-eyed observers realized that Barr was referencing a fringe right-wing conspiracy theory known as The Storm. The convoluted and insane theory claims that there are vast pedophilia clubs run by high-profile Democrats and celebrities that Trump and his administration are working on busting up.
While discussing the recent success of the revival of Barr’s sitcom — ABC has already ordered a second season — CNN’s Oliver Darcy pointed out that as the program finds more success over the coming weeks, Barr’s conspiratorial social media will draw more attention.
Asked about her penchant for tweeting out conspiracy theories and inflammatory rhetoric and whether people are supporting both Barr and the show, Darcy said he thought it was a “mixture of both.”
“I’m sure some people are supporting the show because they relate to whether they find it funny,” he stated. “It was a successful show when it first came on the air. I think a lot of it is also people — they support Roseanne and, like you said, she is a vocal Trump supporter and she does drift into these really crazy conspiracy theories.”
After highlighting Barr’s recent tweet, Darcy explained that she’s referring to The Storm.
“It plays out in fringe corners of the Internet,” the senior media reporter added. “Really right wing. I think that is going to be something that people are going to pay more attention to, particularly as the show finds success.”
