GOP Sen. Ron Johnson: Trump Firing Folks On Twitter Makes It Difficult To Recruit New People

It appears that President Donald Trump’s penchant for announcing changes in his administration via tweet is causing consternation among members of his party.

In a Meet the Press interview that will be aired in its entirety on Sunday, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) explained to host Chuck Todd that Trump needs to realize that firing members of his staff and Cabinet on Twitter will make it harder to get quality people to join his administration.

Todd noted that the ouster of VA Secretary David Shulkin was the third time in the last month the president has fired someone by Twitter, referring to the previous terminations of National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. (Shulkin has said he was called by Chief of Staff John Kelly informing him he was fired moments before Trump sent his tweet.)

The MTP host stated that this didn’t appear to be a “good way to recruit good people” to the administration.

“It’s not the way I’d do it,” Johnson replied. “I think the president does need to understand the effect it has on attracting other people.”

Days after Shulkin’s departure, the White House suddenly shifted gears and claimed that the former VA chief actually resigned and wasn’t fired. A person close to Shulkin told Politico that Shulkin did not prepare a letter of resignation and the termination happened so fast that Shulkin was unable to make it back to his office to talk with his employees.
