During a CNN panel discussion on President Trump‘s attacks on the media, CNN’s Brian Stelter and Playboy White House reporter Brian Karem blasted the President for his false attack on The New York Times.
Trump tweeted today the Times made up a “phony” source in quoting a senior administration official who made some remarks about the North Korea summit. Not only is that official not phony, but the comments were made to dozens of reporters at a small briefing set up by… the White House.
Karem said Lesley Stahl pretty much confirmed what we already knew about Trump’s attacks on the press. He was one of the reporters who heard the remarks in question, saying, “The fact of the matter is he’s the liar, he’s the one that has to be held accountable.”
Stelter said, “Either the President doesn’t know how the White House works, which seems weird, or he’s just lying in order to score political points. Either way, it’s bad.”
Karem had no problem sharing the name of the aide in question (Matt Pottinger) and argued that the White House didn’t hold up its end of the bargain since the president said the briefing never happened.
And, he added, the White House may want to consider how reporters will react to requests to speak on background if this is the kind of treatment they’re going to face as a result.
Stelter circled back to what Stahl revealed and said Trump clearly knows what he’s doing and the media can’t “fall for it.”
