Stephen Colbert Scolds WHCA After Throwing Michelle Wolf Under The Bus: ‘Grow a Pair’

On Monday night, Stephen Colbert kicked off his show by defending comedian Michelle Wolf for her provocative hosting gig at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

He began by accusing Wolf’s critics of being “in a coma for the past two-and-a-half years” and that they are “pretending” to be upset about her disparaging remarks about Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. But what he thought was the “most surprising” response to Wolf’s monologue was from the White House Correspondents’ Association, who he claimed was” putting her in front of a bus” and “driving her over” when  issuing a statement that her monologue was “not in the spirit” of the event.

“Look, you didn’t like, you have that right. Don’t invite her back again, but grow a pair,” Colbert told the WHCA. “This was a roast! And you’re the ones who hired Michelle Wolf! Being mad at her for doing her job is like accusing the valet of briefly stealing your car. And don’t act like you’re surprised. I thought news people did research! But you’re telling me you couldn’t spend 90 seconds on YouTube to find out what her act was like? As a great man once said, ‘Fake News.'”

The Late Show host went on to talk about how many people asked what he thought about this year’s WHCD since he emceed the event in 2006, but he clarified that it wasn’t “Stephen Colbert” that did it but rather “Stephen Colbert,” his conservative alter ego. And he made a brief appearance.
