Trump Allies in Congress Drafted Articles of Impeachment Against Rosenstein as ‘Last Resort’

A group of House Republicans allied with President Donald Trump have drafted articles of impeachment against Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, which they intend to use as a “last resort,” according to the Washington Post.

The Post reported that the draft “came after weeks of disputes with Rosenstein over the Justice Department’s response to congressional requests for documents about the decisions and behavior of federal law-enforcement officials working on the Russia investigation and other federal probes, including the investigation into 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s email server.”

The document was drawn up by members of the House Freedom Caucus, led by Rep. Mark Meadows, who confirmed its existence to the Post and said it would serve as “a last resort option, if the Department of Justice fails to respond.”

“My frustrations about their inability to respond to simple requests could warrant further action,” Meadows said.

A number of Republicans have publicly chastised the Justice Department for failing to hand over documents relating to the Russia probe and investigation into Clinton’s email server. Earlier this month, the Post reported that Meadows warned Rosenstein he could face impeachment proceedings if he failed to address Republicans’ demands.

The move would certainly satisfy Trump, whose frustrations with Robert Mueller’s probe into his campaign’s Russia ties — which Rosenstein oversees — is well known.

As the Post notes, however, the move to impeach Rosenstein “would be unlikely to garner significant support in Congress.”
