On Thursday, President Donald Trump teased the commutation of former Apprentice contestant and former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich along with fellow Apprentice series alum, Martha Stewart.
“Eighteen years is, I think, really unfair,” Trump said, claiming Blagojevich was sent to prison “for being stupid and saying things that every other politician, you know that many other politicians say.”
The president added, “I am seriously thinking about — not pardoning — but I am seriously thinking of a curtailment of Blagojevich.”
Speaking to Fox News’ Martha MacCallum Thursday night, Blagojevich’s wife Patricia Blagojevich responded to Trump’s tease that her husband may soon be home.
“You know… we are also grateful that the president is thinking of us in this way,” she responded when asked what she talked about with her husband, who remains in prison, after the news broke.
She then added that she’s been disappointed before.
“It has been such a long road for us. We have been so disappointed so many times before, by the court twice, and by the president of our own party, we were disappointed by him. So it’s hard to even hope that our deal might be ending soon,” she explained.
Trump, though, she added, is giving her hope that this time it may work out.
“President Trump is a kind man, he is compassionate. He has always been kind to my family, he knows how important it is to get to my husband home to be a father to our daughters…we cannot help but be hopeful,” Blagojevich’s wife said.
Trump’s tease of a Blagojevich commutation comes just days after the former governor published an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal warning, “So today from prison, I am warning all candidates and elected officials to watch out…Politically motivated prosecutors can now interfere with and undo free and fair elections.”
It also comes on the same day as Trump announced the pardon of Dinesh D’Souza.
