President Donald Trump called Therese Okoumou, an immigrant from the Democratic Republic of the Congo who scaled the Statue of Liberty on the 4th of July a “clown.”
“You saw that clown yesterday on the Statue of Liberty, you saw those clowns that went up there,” Trump said during his rally in Montana on Thursday. “I wouldn’t have done it.”
“I would have said let’s get some nets, we’ll wait ’til she….just get some nets,” he continued on.
On Independence Day, Okoumou scaled the base of the Statue of Liberty prompting an evacuation of the tourist-filled island. For hours, she remained at her perch before finally being nabbed by the NYPD.
On Thursday, she was charged in a federal court with trespassing, interference with agency functions and disorderly conduct. She has posted bail.
