Pence Calls Russian Election Meddling ‘An Affront to Our Democracy’

Vice President Mike Pence condemned Russian election interference while speaking at a DHS cybersecurity summit in New York today, saying the Kremlin’s attempt to shift races is “an affront to our democracy.”

“While other nations certainly possess the capability, the fact is, Russia meddled in our 2016 elections. That is the unambiguous judgment of the intelligence community and as the president said, we accept the intelligence community’s conclusion,” Pence said during an address at a Department of Homeland Security cybersecurity summit in New York. “Russia’s goal was to sow discord and division and to weaken the American people’s faith in our democracy. And, while no actual votes were changed, any attempt to interfere in our elections is an affront to our democracy and it will not be allowed.”

When compared to President Donald Trump’s recent mixed messaging on Russian election interference — including when he sided with the Kremlin over US intel on the matter during a joint presser with Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, Finland — Pence’s clear support for American national security services presents quite the contrast. However, Trump has since said he misspoke about Russia, but has not been as explicit in condemning Putin as Pence was today.

The vice president’s comments come on the same day that Facebook stated they found evidence of potential foreign actors using the social media platform to interfere in upcoming midterm elections.
