Trump Falsely Claims You Need Photo ID to ‘Buy Groceries’

President Donald Trump falsely claimed at a rally on Tuesday night that photo ID is required to buy groceries.

“In some states Democrats are even trying to give illegal immigrants the right to vote,” Trump said at his Florida rally Tuesday, likely referring to San Francisco’s Department of Elections proposal to allow non-U.S. citizens to vote in school board elections.

“We believe that only American citizens should vote in American elections,” he said. “Which is why the time has come for voter ID, like everything else. Voter ID.”

Trump’s call for voter ID laws rests on the false claim that there is rampant voter fraud during elections.

“You know if you go out and you want to buy groceries, you need a picture on a card,” Trump continued. “You need ID. You go out and you want to buy anything, you need ID, and you need your picture.”

“It’s crazy,” he added.
