Sen. John Kennedy: ‘Put Down the Bong’ if You Think Kavanaugh Probe is ‘About the Truth’

Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) seemed quite unimpressed on Monday night with the claims of Julie Swetnick — who is one of three women to have accused Brett Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct.

In the past week, Swetnick came forward with her claim that the Supreme Court nominee drugged women and participated in gang rapes in the 1980s. However, when Swetnick spoke to MSNBC about these claims in an interview which aired Monday night, NBC News reporter Kate Snow noted that Swetnick contradicted some of her previous statements and backtracked on others.

Martha MacCallum played a brief clip of the Swetnick interview for Kennedy on Fox News Monday night.

“This entire thing makes me want to heave,” Kennedy said, after the clip was played.

“If you think this is about searching for the truth, you ought to put down the bong. This is not about the truth, this is about gamesmanship and power, political politics. Its just that simple. Julie Swetnick, there is no corroboration. She says that she attended ten gang rapes at which Judge Kavanaugh was supposedly involved. She didn’t report any of them. She is represented by [Michael] Avenatti, who has done his best to make all of us about Mr. Avenatti. I don’t think anybody in the Milky Way could be surprised that the Democrats are yet again moving the goal posts.”

The senator added that his colleagues need to hurry up and cast their votes because “the longer we wait, the more allegations are going to come out.”

“This is a freak show. An intergalactic freak show,” Kennedy said. “It’s a grotesque carnival and it’s only going to get worse. I am embarrassed for the United States Senate. We have hit bottom and started to dig.”
