Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor is a brilliant legal scholar, a self-avowed avid reader and the author of two new children’s books.
She does not, however, have an expert grasp on classic movie themes, or so it seems.
During a lighthearted interview that aired on Friday’s episode of The Late Show, Colbert asked the Justice a number of rapid-fire questions.
“Is it okay to take a penny if you never leave a penny?” Colbert asked.
The Justice ruled no.
“Is it ever okay to microwave fish?” he further asked.
Sotomayer was quick to rule against that too.
Then Colbert asked this: “If there’s something strange in your neighborhood, who you gonna call?”
Sotomayer repeated Colbert’s question.
“If you mean ‘strange’ by dangerous for myself or others, I would call the police,” the Justice reasoned.
“What if it was something spooky or otherworldly? Something strange in your neighborhood. Who you gonna call?” Colbert prompted again.
Sotomayer then asked if he meant the spooky thing didn’t pose any danger.
When Colbert said it could pose a danger, she said she would still call the police.
“Okay, what if the police couldn’t handle this particular danger?” Colbert pressed. “Perhaps if it was an ethereal or spiritual danger? Perhaps there were ghosts.”
“Oh, that’s a fascinating question!” the Justice replied.
