Devin Nunes announced on Fox News on Sunday that he planned to send eight criminal referrals — five of them for lying to Congress and assorted misdeeds — to Attorney General William Barr as soon as this week.
Nunes did not disclose the name of the persons he says lied to Congress and are leakers.
“So we’ve been working on this for two and a half years compiling information, right, as we continue this investigation,” Nunes said on Fox’s Sunday Morning Futures.
“We’re prepared this week to notify the attorney general that we’re prepared to send those referrals over,” Nunes also said. “First of all, all of these are classified or sensitive. … Five of them are what I would call straight up referrals — so just referrals that name someone and name the specific crimes.”
He added: “Those crimes are lying to Congress, misleading Congress, leaking classified information. So five of them are those types.”
Nunes also claimed he was acting now because an Attorney General was now in place.
“We couldn’t really send these criminal referrals over without an Attorney General in place, so we are prepared this week to notify the Attorney General that we are prepared to send those referrals over and brief him if he wishes to be briefed,” he continued on. “We think they’re pretty clear, but as of right now this is, this may not be all of them, but this cleans up quite a bit. We have eight referrals that we are prepared to send over to the Attorney General this week.”
As CNN pointed out, while Nunes launched his own investigation with the power of the Republican-controlled Congress, he lost his gavel — and his subpoena powers — with the new Congress.
Since then, he has not only focused on the criminal referrals — which are essentially a request for the Attorney General to open an investigation — but has also sued Twitter.
