Joe Kennedy Rebukes Trump In SOTU Response: ‘Build a Wall and My Generation Will Tear It Down’

Rep. Joe Kennedy III (D-MA) delivered the official Democratic response to Donald Trump‘s State of the Union speech tonight, and he did so by tearing into the divisive politics and dark direction the president has taken the country for his first year in office.

Kennedy began by lamenting that Trump’s leadership has created hyper-partisan “fractured fault lines” which have negatively impacted citizens throughout America. While Trump talked about his accomplishments earlier in the evening, Kennedy listed the president’s low points, including the government shutdown, the ongoing Russia investigations, and the increased public presence of racism/white supremacy.

“No matter your political beliefs, this is not right,” Kennedy said to applause. “This is not who we are.”

As Kennedy bemoaned the chaos of the Trump Administration, he criticized the White House by saying they have embraced policies that are “a rebuke to our highest American ideal” of equality and justice for all. He also said the Trump was presenting a “false choice” by saying that America needs to choose between helping DACA Dreamers or supporting American citizens.

“Here is the answer that Democrats offer tonight: we choose both.”

As Kennedy carried on, he gave nods to #BlackLivesMatter and #MeToo, and he proclaimed, “Build a wall and my generation will tear it down.”

“Bullies may land a punch,” Kennedy said. “They might leave a mark, but they have never, not once, in the history of our United States, managed to match the strength and spirit of a people united in defense of their future.”
