Vince McMahon Announces Revival of XFL Football League, Promises There Will Be No Kneeling

Professional wrestling mogul Vince McMahon announced the forthcoming revival of the oft-maligned football league, the XFL, in a recorded announcement today.

“The new XFL will kick off in 2020 and, quite frankly, we are going to give the game of football back to fans,” he said during the announcement. “In the XFL the quality of the human being is going to be as important as the quality of the player.”

The WWE CEO later spoke to ESPN and said that the XFL would not feature any political components, such as players kneeling.

“People don’t want social and political issues coming into play when they are trying to be entertained,” McMahon said. “We want someone who wants to take a knee to do their version of that on their personal time.”

He also said that players with any criminal records whatsoever would not be welcome in the XFL, stating “If you have any sort of criminal record or commit a crime you aren’t playing in this league.”

Despite his wife, Linda McMahon, having worked with President Donald Trump as head of the federal small business administration since February, the wrestling magnate said that he has “no idea whether President Trump will support this.”

McMahon also promised the XFL would be “faster paced” and “easier to understand.” The league will launch in 2020 with eight teams to start.

The XFL was originally conceived as an off-season alternative to the NFL nearly two decades ago, in 2001, but was quickly shuttered due to flagging ratings. The league offered rougher play, scantily clad cheerleaders and other accoutrements one might expect from Vince McMahon.
