Father of Parkland Victim Corners Rubio on Gun Legislation: ‘Your Comments…Have Been Pathetically Weak’

A father of a slain student in the Parkland shooting was ready to get answers from lawmakers – and particularly one lawmaker – at the CNN town hall.

Fred Guttenberg, whose daughter Jaime was killed last week, went in on Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) about his reluctance to peg guns as a major factor in the shooting.

“I want to like you. Here’s the problem,” Guttenberg said. “Your comments this week and those of our president have been pathetically weak.”

“Look at me and tell me: Guns were the factor in the hunting of our kids in this school this week,” he said.

“The problems we face here today cannot be solved by gun laws alone,” Rubio began, but the grieving father cut him off.

“Were guns the factor in the hunting of our kids?” Guttenberg pressed.

“Absolutely,” Rubio responded. The senator went on to say that he will support the banning of bump stocks and changing the background system to include more information, and then circled back to the assault weapons ban.

“Let me be honest with you about that one. If I believed that that law would have prevented this from happening, I would support it,” Rubio said.

At this, Guttenberg was incensed.

“Senator Rubio, my daughter, running down the hallway at Marjory Stoneman Douglas was shot in the back with an assault weapon, the weapon of choice. It is a weapon of war. The fact that you can’t stand with everybody in this building and say that, I’m sorry.”
