Oprah Announces She Will Match George and Amal Clooney’s $500k Donation to ‘March For Our Lives’

Celebrity heavyweights are putting their financial heft behind a march on Washington being organized by students who survived last week’s mass shooting that left 17 dead at a Parkland, Florida high school.

Earlier on Tuesday, George and Amal Clooney announced they are donating $500,000 to the upcoming “March For Our Lives” — and now talk show titan Oprah Winfrey has said she will match their donation:

“George and Amal, I couldn’t agree with you more,” Oprah tweeted. “I am joining forces with you and will match your $500,000 donation to ‘March For Our Lives.’ These inspiring young people remind me of the Freedom Riders of the 60s who also said we’ve had ENOUGH and our voices will be heard.”

Oprah’s involvement in the march will likely been seen in a similar light as her rousing Golden Globes speech on the Me Too movement — as an indication of her political ambitions. Specifically, a run in 2020, which remains a favorite morsel of speculation for pundits, despite Winfrey’s denials that she intends on running.

The march is being planned by students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, who survived a massacre last Wednesday after a 19-year-old gunman who was expelled from the school opened fire. The march will take place in Washington, DC on March 24, and will advocate for reducing gun violence.

“Amal and I are so inspired by the courage and eloquence of these young men and women from Stoneman Douglas High School,” George Clooney wrote in a statement announcing he and his wife would be attending the march.

“Our family will be there on March 24 to stand side by side with this incredible generation of young people from all over the country, and in the name of our children Ella and Alexander, we’re donating 500,000 dollars to help pay for this groundbreaking event. Our children’s lives depend on it.”
