Comey Addresses GOP Sen. Saying He Should’ve Waited to ‘Cash In on a Book’ During Investigation

Former FBI Director James Comey defended the release of his White House tell-all after Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) said he shouldn’t have “cashed in” on it during Special Counsel Robert Mueller‘s investigation.

“I cannot imagine why an FBI director would seek to essentially cash in on a book when the investigation is very much alive,” Collins told Chuck Todd. “He should have waited to do his memoir.”

A Higher Loyalty was released on April 17th and details Comey’s time serving President Donald Trump‘s administration. While Mueller’s probe is indeed continuing, investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election, among other things, Comey said the book isn’t about that.

“I hope she’ll read it and see that it’s not about the investigation,” he told Todd in response. “It’s… not even about Donald Trump. It’s about something much broader that I thought it was important to talk about now.

Asked by Todd what he hopes those who read the book will learn, Comey said the point was to focus on values and leadership.

“I hope the reader takes away that Donald Trump and Barack Obama and George W. Bush and others illustrate something about the importance of values in the life of this country and about what leadership can and should be,” Comey said. “I hope they see the FBI as an institution committed to values and caring deeply about being separate from the political tribes in this country.”
