Don Lemon: People Angry at My Comments About Terror Threat from White Men Are ‘Missing the Entire Point’

Tonight CNN’s Don Lemon responded to the outrage over comments he made Monday night.

Lemon said the following to Chris Cuomo after his colleague covered the recent shooting of two black men at a Kentucky Kroger:

“I keep trying to point out to people not to demonize any one group or any one ethnicity, but we keep thinking that the biggest terror threat is something else. Some people who are marching towards the border like it’s imminent. And the last they did this, a couple of hundred people came and they, you know, most of them didn’t get into the country. Most of them… got tuckered out before they even made to the border. So we have to stop demonizing people and realize the biggest terror threat in this country is white men, most of them radicalized to the right, and we have to start doing something about them. There is no travel ban on them. There is no ban on––you know, they had the Muslim ban, there is no ‘white guy ban.’ So what do we do about that?”

After getting a lot of blowback and criticism, Lemon tonight––while talking about right-wing extremist threats––said, “I made some comments about that in a conversation with Chris. I said that the biggest terror threat in this country comes from radicals on the far right, primarily white men. That angered some people.”

He continued:

“But let’s put emotion aside and look at the cold hard facts. The evidence is overwhelming. A recent report from the Government Accountability Office shows that. Even though more people died in attacks connected to Islamic extremists, the vast majority of deadly attacks in this country from 2001 to 2016 were carried out by far-right violent extremists.”

Lemon brought up a number of studies showing the alarming number of domestic attacks by right-wing extremists.

“So let me break that down for you even further,” he continued. “Their analysis shows that for every 8 deadly attacks by right-wing extremists, there were 1 by left-wing extremists. Those are the fact. So people who were angered about what I said are missing the entire point.”

“We don’t need to worry about people who are thousands of miles away,” he concluded. “The biggest threats are homegrown. The facts prove that.”
