House Homeland Security Committee Chair to Trump: ‘Don’t Send Us a Puppet to Run’ DHS

Homeland Security Committee chair Rep. Bennie Thompson has a message for President Donald Trump.

He wants a professional to be named the next Secretary of Homeland Security, not a puppet.

Speaking with CNN’s Erin Burnett on Monday, Thompson was reminded of his response to Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen‘s ouster.

In his terse statement on Sunday, Thompson said Neilsen was “unable to lead and stand up to the President for his misguided, wall obsessed anti-immigrant agenda.”

After reading those words, Burnett noted that we have learned that Nielsen “did push back at the president in these meetings” and argued the law would not allow it.

She then asked: “What if her replacement, her full replacement when there is one, tries to cite the law?”

Thompson replied: “We have to have professionals. We are a nation of laws.”

He continued on, “So to put anybody other than a professional in that position is doing a disservice to the men and women who put their lives on the line every day.”

Then, addressing Trump, he said this: “So I say to the president, don’t send us a puppet to run the Department of Homeland Security. Send us a professional.”
