S.E. Cupp Dings Clooney, Oprah For Donating to March Against Gun Violence: ‘$500,000 to a March?’

On Tuesday, George Clooney announced that he and his wife Amal Clooney are donating $500,000 to March For Our Lives — a march against gun violence which is scheduled to take place in Washington D.C. on March 24. Hours later, Oprah Winfrey followed suit — pledging to match the Clooneys’ half million dollar offering.

S.E. Cupp is not questioning the motives of Clooney, Oprah, and other celebrities donating to the march — saying that they likely believe in the cause for “all the right reasons.” But Wednesday on Unfiltered, the conservative commentator questioned their methods.

“Here’s an idea: Maybe, just maybe, that money could be better spent on finding real solutions to the problem of gun violence and not on a march,” Cupp said. “Grassroots activism should be inexpensive. And, you know, grassroots.”

Cupp noted that her show reached out to the National Parks Service in an effort to determine the estimated cost of the march. That agency put the figure at $65,000. As such, the several million dollars already pledged by celebrities seems, to S.E. Cupp, like overkill.

“If you’re Oprah or George Clooney and thinking ‘Gosh, I really want to make a difference in this. How can I best do that?’ Five hundred thousand dollars to a march?”

The conservative pundit noted Tweets from New York Times reporter Julie Turkewitz sharing concerns from a Parkland survivor about celebrities having a negative impact on the students’ message.

“There’s a big risk in Hollywood taking over,” Cupp said.
