Media Critic David Zurawik on Joy Reid Controversy: NBC News ‘Owes Us an Investigation of This’

CNN’s Brian Stelter addressed the controversy surrounding homophobic posts on Joy Reid‘s old blog.

After discussing NBC News’ handling of the sexual misconduct allegations against Tom Brokaw, he spoke with Baltimore Sun media critic David Zurawik about Reid.

Reid told Mediaite in a statement last week the posts were fabricated, but the claims of potential hacking have not yet been proven.

Reid yesterday addressed the controversy on AM Joy, saying, “I genuinely do not believe I wrote those hateful things because they are completely alien to me. But I can definitely understand, based on things I have tweeted and I have written in the past, why some people don’t believe me. I have not exempt from being cruel or hurtful to the very people I want to advocate for. I own that. I get it. And for that I am truly, truly sorry.”

After that, Zurawik said today, “NBC News now owes us an investigation of this.”

“My feeling is I don’t know exactly what she’s saying, even,” he continued. “I’m confused by what she says happened with this.”

He argued that news organizations owe their audiences “some kind of credible information they can believe.” Stelter added, “If we’re going to hold the administration accountable, we need to hold ourselves accountable.”
